Chronic Inflammation – Effects on Aging

Our philosophy at RegiMEN centers on safe, natural, effective products and a holistic approach to anti-aging. Last month we discussed Theories on Aging, and detailed many of the causes of aging and death, including: changes in hormones, free radical damage to cells and chronic inflammation. The public is inundated with anti-oxidant products; in your vitamins, your energy drink, your yogurt and so on. Inflammation however, is far less understood. Most people associate inflammation with the pain and swelling that accompanies an injury. Their ‘treatment’ for inflammation is typically a pain medication, usually a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication such as ibuprofen. But there is far more to inflammation. So it’s entirely appropriate we take a more in-depth look at the chronic inflammation issue and how it affects the aging process and contributes to many other serious illnesses.
Inflammation is a part of the body’s natural defense system against injury and disease.  It is the body’s response to injury and infection whereby immune cells are called to the site of the injury through the blood stream. Without inflammation, wounds might never heal properly, resulting in a progressive destruction of tissue and loss of function.

Inflammation can be classified either as acute or chronic. The example above relates to acute inflammation and, as indicated, is an important step in the healing process. Chronic inflammation, on the other hand, is a disorder unto itself, and instead of protecting our bodies, it results in harm to the body.  Modern medicine now recognizes that chronic inflammation is a primary contributing factor in a variety of degenerative diseases:

  • Inflammation in a joint can result in arthritis.
  • Inflammation in the blood vessels can lead to atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries).
  • Inflammation is a major contributor to cardiovascular disease, including stroke and heart attack, as well as cancer.

Chronic inflammation has been implicated in a host of illnesses including:

  • Asthma
  • Autoimmune diseases
  • Osteoporosis
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Alzheimers disease
  • Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
  • Allergies

And it should be noted that people who suffer from chronic inflammation tend to appear much older than their chronological age.
There are several protocols to address chronic inflammation:

  • A healthy diet featuring the following foods:  (omega-3 fatty acids in fish such as salmon; good fats such as olive oil; foods high in anti-oxidants such as green vegetables, cherries / blueberries, the spice Tumeric and green tea)
  • A conscientious exercise program
  • Supplementation with a potent anti-inflammatory

We’ve detailed many of the leading causes of aging and death; hormonal changes, oxidation and inflammation. The Essential RegiMEN Package is very specifically designed to address each of these issues with scientifically developed cutting edge products.

Continue to follow us as we explore holistic new anti-aging strategies, always focused on safety, with natural and effective products and healthy lifestyle choices in your diet along with nutrition and conditioning RegiMEN.
Give us your feedback. What anti inflammation protocols and regimens have you followed? How effective were they for you?
Yours in good health,

Great information. Although very much aware of acute inflammation and related problems had no idea of the part chronic inflammation plays in illnesses such as arthritis, Alzheimers and cardiovascular disease. Great information. Please keep it coming.
