It includes everything from seminars, on-line services, acupuncture, hypnosis, liposuction, clinics, boot camps, diet plans, diet pills, prescription drugs and bariatric surgery. It includes big names and big companies such as Jenny Craig, Nutri-System, the Mayo Clinic, LA Weight Loss Clinics and Weight Watchers. And it includes small companies and independents. It includes programs from personal trainers and programs that require no exercise at all. Many of the programs feature either a severely restricted caloric intake or a very radical approach. There are variations on the ketosis diets (Atkins and South Beach), the “use only our foods” diets (Jenny Craig, Nutri-System, Weight Watchers) and the medical diets up to and including bariatric surgery. Some feature a “lose weight fast” approach and others preach a changed lifestyle approach.

The ironic thing is that if you read the ads, and the blogs, almost every approach has valid success stories, and almost as many disgruntled, dissatisfied customers. If one approach truly worked above all others, there would be no need for any more books or seminars to be introduced. Obviously this is not the case.

So what does work? A plan customized to the individual, not a cookie cutter approach. A plan based on solid nutrition and exercise. A plan that establishes a base line and provides for ongoing follow ups with the client to ensure adherence to the plan, to chart progress, and to adjust the program as necessary.
