Theories on Aging

Our philosophy at RegiMEN centers on safe, natural, effective products and a holistic approach to anti-aging. So it’s entirely appropriate we take a step back and look at the aging process, the study of which is Gerontology. But first let’s review some interesting facts about our aging population.   • The over 50 segment is the fastest growing segment of the population.
  • Today there are approximately 450 million baby boomers world-wide.
  • People around the world are getting older and living longer.
  • Life expectancy is at an all time high.
  • In the U.S. someone turns fifty every 7 seconds!

There are two major schools on Aging: Programmed Theory and Error Theory.

The Programmed Theory asserts that the human body is designed to age and that there is a certain biological timeline our body follows:

Aging is caused by genes switching on and off over time
Caused by changes in hormones
The immune system declines over time

The Error Theory asserts that aging is caused by environmental changes to our body’s systems, which accumulate over time:

Cells and tissues simply wear out
The faster an organism uses oxygen, the shorter it lives (think mouse vs. turtle)
Cross linked proteins accumulate and slow down bodily functions
Free radicals cause damage to cells that eventually impair function
Genetic mutations cause cells to malfunction
Chronic inflammation is a major factor  and a primary  contributor to death

We definitively know that the body is continually undergoing complex biochemical reactions, some of which cause damage which is often viewed as just part of getting older.
